Google’s March 2026 core update, the first broad core update of the year, has finished rolling out. Here’s what you need to know and how to analyze your data.

Rollout Completed on April 8

Google confirmed on its Search Status Dashboard that the March 2026 core update was fully rolled out as of April 8, 2026. It started on March 27, so the rollout took 12 days, within the two-week window Google had announced and faster than the December 2025 core update, which took 18 days.

What Google Said

Google described it as “a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites.” There was no companion blog post and no specific new guidance.

As a reminder, Google core updates make broad changes to Google’s ranking systems. They don’t target a particular type of content or a specific policy violation: some pages gain visibility and others lose it, based on an overall reassessment of quality.

Three Updates in Five Weeks

Late winter 2026 was unusually busy on the algorithm front:

  • February Discover core update: completed on February 27 after 22 days. It was the first time Google publicly labeled a core update as specific to Discover.
  • March spam update: rolled out and completed in under 20 hours on March 24 and 25, the shortest spam update Google has confirmed on its dashboard.
  • March core update: launched two days later, on March 27.

That sequence, spam first and core second, is likely no accident. Fighting spam is part of the overall quality reassessment: you clear the table before recalibrating ranking signals.

How It Compares With Recent Core Updates

December 202518 daysDecember 11 to 29
June 202517 daysJune 30 to July 17

Only the December 2024 core update finished faster.

What to Do Now

Now that the rollout is complete, you can compare your before-and-after performance in Google Search Console. Google recommends waiting at least one full week after a rollout ends before drawing conclusions.

Use the weeks before March 27 as your baseline and compare them with data from after April 8. One caveat: the spam update finished on March 25, so any ranking movement between March 24 and March 27 could come from either update. Our checklist on whether a ranking drop comes from an algorithm update or a site change can help you separate the two.

A drop in rankings after a core update doesn’t mean your site violates Google’s policies. It reflects a web-wide reassessment of quality. A manual action reported in Search Console is a different problem, covered in our guide to Google penalty recovery. What Comes Next

Google will likely keep making smaller, unannounced core changes between major rollouts. In late 2025, it updated its documentation to clarify that smaller core adjustments happen on an ongoing basis.

Update (October 2026): Google followed up with the May 2026 core update, which ran from May 21 to June 2, 2026. Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for the latest confirmed updates.
