Google is once again putting artificial intelligence (AI) to work for human intelligence, this time by revamping Google News, the service that lets you keep up with local, national, and international news in just a few clicks. Here’s a look at the Google News redesign from the Mountain View giant.

Google News: All the News in One Place

Every minute, tens of thousands of new pages are added to the vast library that is Google. Over the past two decades, it has grown into the incredible source of information we all know today.

To help people follow the news, Google launched Google News in 2002, a service that collects and organizes news articles on every imaginable topic.

More than 15 years later, Google is overhauling the service and giving artificial intelligence an even bigger role. What does the overhaul involve? Let’s take a look.

Google News: What’s Changed

Until now, Google News simply organized the many news articles in its index by relevance and topic. Thanks to AI, Google News can now collect, analyze, and organize articles as soon as they’re published. Google’s AI processes information from many sources in real time and presents it as a coherent whole. It’s part of a broader shift toward language understanding in search that continued with the BERT update in 2019.

According to Google, the technology makes it possible to synthesize information and put it together in a way that helps readers make sense of events, as well as their impact and the reactions they’ve sparked.

Tailored Content

Through its app, Google News can now serve up personalized content that closely matches each reader’s habits and interests. The more you use it, the more the recommendations are refined, so the stories you care about are always easy to reach.

New: Newscasts

Google News is also mixing sources and formats to give a complete view of each topic, combining text, images, videos, quotes, and more. Newscasts, the name of the new visual format, are meant to help readers put stories in perspective and dig deeper into a news topic.

A section called Full Coverage will also give access to everything published about a given story. Google describes it as an unfiltered view of events from a range of trusted news sources.

The new version of Google News hadn’t reached us yet at the time of writing, but it shouldn’t be long. Google said the rollout began on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, on Android, iOS, and the web in 127 countries, with availability for everyone the following week.
