You can now post strikingly realistic photos on Facebook. With Facebook 3D photos, pictures taken in the iPhone’s Portrait mode get a three-dimensional effect when they’re shared on the social network.
Facebook users already know 360-degree photos, which arrived in June 2016. They let you view a photo as if you were standing where it was taken. By tilting your phone, you can explore every part of the image in detail. The experience is far more immersive than a regular photo. To get the effect, you simply take the picture in your smartphone’s “Panorama” mode. Once the photo is posted, Facebook detects that it’s a panorama and automatically applies the 360-degree format. Millions of 360-degree photos have been shared every day since the feature launched, and it works on many smartphone models.

From 360-Degree Photos to 3D Objects
Next, 3D objects arrived on Mark Zuckerberg’s social network. The feature was announced in October 2017 and became available in March 2018. Its goal was to introduce Facebook users to 3D images, and it worked! Users could rotate the object a full 360 degrees. The image quality was outstanding: realistic colors and smooth textures. A win for Facebook, and it was only the beginning. Augmented reality was now within reach for the most influential social network.
Adding Depth to Your Screen
Since October 11, 2018, 3D photos can appear in Facebook’s News Feed. It’s a new way to bring posts to life on Mark Zuckerberg’s social network. For now, the effect works with Portrait mode on the latest iPhone models (7 Plus, 8 Plus, X, XS, and XS Max). These phones have two rear cameras. They shoot simultaneously and capture two different planes, which are combined into a single photo. That’s what creates the sense of depth. The effect is even more striking when you view the images with a VR headset. The photos look so real it’s genuinely impressive.
For the best quality, Facebook recommends placing the subject about 3 to 5 feet from the phone and making sure it stands out clearly from the background. Get those elements right, and the image looks more lifelike than ever.
Portrait photos don’t automatically turn into 3D when you post them. To make one 3D, select the “3D Photo” option when creating a post, choose the image from your camera roll, and share it. It’s a simple process the social network set up specifically for the feature. Facebook has also published tips to help you take the most successful 3D shots.
For now, 3D Photos is available only on iPhone, but Facebook plans to expand compatibility to Android devices soon.
