Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter: social networks are where we share our moods, our news, and above all our favorite photos. They’re all built around sharing, but each one has its own design and its own way of displaying images.

Wondering why your cat photo gets cropped on Facebook? Why your outfit pic looks better on Snapchat than in your Instagram feed? Or are you a social media manager who wants every visual to look its best? Here’s the cheat sheet.

Below are the optimal social media image sizes for 2022, network by network, from the social media marketing team at Référenceur, plus a summary table at the end.

Facebook Image Sizes for 2022

Facebook Profile Picture

Facebook displays profile pictures at 170 x 170 pixels, so upload a photo of at least 180 x 180 px. In any case, a square image is best so it crops cleanly.

Facebook Cover Photo

For cover photos, Facebook recommends 820 x 312 pixels. The minimum is 400 px wide by 150 px tall.

Facebook Group Cover Photo

The recommended size is 820 x 428 pixels.

Facebook Page Profile Picture

Use at least 180 x 180 pixels. Choose a square format so your photo or logo crops cleanly.

Facebook Page Cover Photo

The ideal size is 820 x 312 pixels.

Facebook Event Cover Photo

The event cover photo is 500 x 262 pixels.

Facebook Photo Posts

For a photo posted to your feed, the ideal size is 1080 x 1080 pixels for a square image and 1080 x 1350 px for a vertical rectangle.

When you share a link to an article or website, the preview image should be 1200 x 630 pixels.

Facebook Stories

Facebook Stories keep gaining popularity. For a sharp visual, Facebook recommends at least 1080 x 1920 pixels.

Facebook Videos

On every social network except YouTube, forget horizontal video and go mobile-friendly. Vertical videos at 1080 x 1920 px, the same as stories, work well.

For video ads, use 1080 x 1080 px so the format works on every type of screen.

Facebook Reels

Short-form video keeps getting more attention, and you can now post Reels on Facebook, just like on Instagram. For Reels (and their cover), use 1080 x 1920 px.

Twitter Image Sizes for 2022

Twitter Profile Picture

Twitter recommends 200 x 200 pixels.

Twitter Header Photo

The optimal size is 1500 x 500 pixels.

Images in Tweets

The recommended size is 1024 pixels wide by at least 512 pixels tall.

When you share a link on Twitter, the preview image (generated automatically from the link) should be 520 x 254 pixels.

Twitter Ad Images

For website or app cards, images should fall between 800 x 418 pixels and 800 x 800 pixels.

For ads with multiple images, each image should be at least 800 pixels wide, with a 1.91:1 aspect ratio.

For direct message ads, Twitter recommends an image at least 800 pixels wide.

Instagram Image Sizes for 2022

Instagram Profile Picture

For a clean display, an Instagram profile picture should be 150 x 150 pixels.

Instagram Feed Posts

In every case, use an image at least 1080 pixels wide if you want a high-quality visual.

  • For a landscape photo, the recommended minimum is 1080 x 566 pixels.
  • For a portrait (vertical) photo, the minimum is 1080 x 1350 pixels.
  • A square photo should be at least 1080 x 1080 pixels.

The same sizes apply to posts in a carousel or a guide.

Reels are the videos shaping Instagram’s future. They should be 1080 x 1920 pixels.

The cover image for an Instagram Reel is also 1080 x 1920 pixels, and the same goes for Lives.

Instagram Stories

Whether it’s a regular story or a story ad, the optimal size is 1080 x 1920 pixels.

For ads, keep key elements away from the very top of the screen so the visual isn’t spoiled when the post is shared.

Instagram IGTV

As with other Instagram formats, stick with 1080 x 1920 pixels.

You now have a complete guide to posting images on social media. An image doesn’t display the same way on Facebook as it does on Instagram, which is why it pays to know these sizes so every visual is shared at its best. Once your visuals are ready, plan them in a social media content calendar.

Whenever possible, use JPEG rather than PNG or GIF, which produce heavier files. Lighter files also help with image SEO.

Also keep in mind that the larger the image, the sharper it will look.
